April is one of the best months for central Vietnam β€” the rainy season hasn't started and the summer heat is building pleasantly. Beautiful beach weather. Ba Na Hills will be noticeably cooler (~15–20Β°C at the summit). My Son may have light showers.

πŸ‘• What to wear: Light summer clothes. Bring a warm layer for Ba Na Hills β€” it can feel cold on the cable car and at the summit. Modest clothing for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered).

Thunderstorms

April–May is the absolute hottest period in Vientiane. The rainy season is approaching so dramatic afternoon thunderstorms are possible β€” they typically bring brief, heavy downpours that cool things down quickly. Buddha Park excursion best done in the morning.

πŸ‘• What to wear: Ultra-light, loose clothing. Stay hydrated constantly β€” water and electrolytes. Afternoons best spent indoors or poolside. The riverside is lovely in the late evening breeze.
🧴 Sun & Heat essentials for the whole trip

SPF 50+ sunscreen (reapply every 2h), wide-brim hat, UV-protective sunglasses, light scarf (temple visits + sun), electrolyte sachets or sports drinks, portable fan (for outdoor queues). Heat exhaustion is a real risk in Laos β€” drink 2–3 L of water per day minimum.

πŸ“‹ General Entry Requirements (Everyone)

πŸ₯ Health & Medical

πŸ’‰ Vaccinations

Consult your doctor or a travel medicine clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure. Standard recommendations for Southeast Asia include:

Essential (if not up to date)
  • Tetanus / Diphtheria / Polio booster
Consider (depending on activities)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis B
  • Japanese Encephalitis (rural & Laos)
  • Rabies (if trekking / remote areas)
  • Malaria prophylaxis β€” generally not needed for the cities on our route, but discuss Luang Prabang region with your doctor
Standard (always recommended)
  • COVID-19 (up to date)
  • Influenza (seasonal)

🦟 Mosquitoes & Dengue

Dengue fever is present across Vietnam and Laos, especially during the wet season transition in April–May. There is no vaccine available in most countries β€” prevention is key.

πŸ’Š Travel Medicine Kit

🍽️ Food & Water Safety

Drink bottled or filtered water only β€” tap water is not safe in Vietnam or Laos. Ice in reputable restaurants is generally fine (made from filtered water). Be cautious with raw salads at street stalls. Well-cooked street food is usually safer than it looks β€” go where locals eat! If in doubt: boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.

πŸ’° Money & Currency

πŸ‡»πŸ‡³ Vietnam β€” Vietnamese Dong (VND)

Approximate rate: 1 EUR β‰ˆ 27,000 VND Β· 1 USD β‰ˆ 25,000 VND
Large numbers are normal β€” a bowl of phở costs ~40,000–80,000 VND (~€1.50–3). Cash is king for street food and local markets. Cards accepted in hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites in cities.

πŸ‡±πŸ‡¦ Laos β€” Lao Kip (LAK) & USD

Approximate rate: 1 EUR β‰ˆ 23,000 LAK Β· 1 USD β‰ˆ 21,500 LAK
USD is widely accepted alongside Kip for larger purchases (hotels, activities). Thai Baht is also accepted near the border. Have a mix of small USD bills and Kip for daily expenses.

🏧 ATMs

Available in all cities we visit. Withdraw from bank ATMs (not airport ATMs which charge higher fees). Vietnam ATMs typically dispense up to 3,000,000 VND (~€110) per transaction. Laos ATMs often have low limits too. Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid card blocks.

πŸ’³ Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, tourist restaurants, and larger stores. A fee of 2–3% is common. Carry cash for markets, street food, tuk-tuks, and small guesthouses. American Express has limited acceptance.

πŸ’± Money Exchange

Best rates at local exchange bureaux or banks β€” avoid airports and hotels. In Vietnam, Vietcombank and BIDV offer good rates. In Laos, BCEL Bank is reliable. Never exchange with unauthorized street money changers.

🀝 Tipping

No need to tip, it's included!

πŸ“± Communication & Connectivity

πŸ“Ά SIM Cards β€” Vietnam

Buy a local SIM at the airport on arrival or at any phone shop. Best networks: Viettel (best rural coverage), Vinaphone, Mobifone. A tourist SIM with 10–20 GB data costs ~$5–10 USD for 30 days. Bring your unlocked phone.

πŸ“Ά SIM Cards β€” Laos

Buy a Laos SIM at Vientiane or Luang Prabang airport. Best network: Unitel or TPLUS. Data SIM with 10 GB costs ~$5–8 USD. Coverage is good in cities; more limited in rural areas. Note: your Vietnam SIM won't work in Laos.

🌐 eSIM (Alternative)

If your phone supports eSIM, consider buying a regional Southeast Asia eSIM before departure (e.g., Airalo, Holafly). These cover both Vietnam and Laos with one plan. Convenient but slightly more expensive than local SIMs.

πŸ“‘ WiFi

Free WiFi is widely available in hotels, restaurants, and cafΓ©s in Vietnam and Laos. Quality varies β€” expect it to be slow or unreliable in rural areas and on excursions (Ha Long Bay, Kuang Si, Ninh Binh). Download offline maps (Google Maps or maps.me) before excursions!

πŸš• Grab App

Download Grab before you go β€” it's the Uber of Southeast Asia and works in all cities on our route in both Vietnam and Laos. Much safer and fairer than negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers. Add a payment method in advance. Essential for getting around in cities.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Offline Maps

Download offline maps for all cities in Google Maps before each leg of the trip. Also consider maps.me as a backup. Very useful in areas with poor connectivity (Ninh Binh, rural Laos) or when roaming data is expensive.

πŸ™ Cultural Etiquette

πŸ‘— Temple Dress Code

Shoulders and knees must be covered at all temples and pagodas. Many sites provide sarongs to borrow at the entrance. Bring a light scarf or a pair of lightweight trousers that can go over shorts quickly.

πŸ₯Ώ Shoes Off

Always remove shoes before entering temples, pagodas, and many traditional homes. Slip-on shoes or sandals save a lot of time β€” avoid shoes with complex laces for temple-heavy days.

πŸ“Έ Photography

Always ask permission before photographing people, especially monks and worshippers. At the Tak Bat ceremony in Luang Prabang, observe from a respectful distance without flash. Many temples prohibit photography inside β€” look for signs.

🧘 Monk Etiquette

Women should never touch monks or hand anything directly to them. If you wish to give something to a monk, place it on a cloth in front of him. Don't block their path during morning alms rounds. Keep your voice low near temples.

πŸ’† Bargaining

Expected at markets and for tuk-tuks β€” always friendly and with a smile! Counter-offer at about 50–60% of the opening price and negotiate from there. Accept the price gracefully and never be aggressive. Don't bargain in proper restaurants or shops with fixed prices.

🀲 Greetings

Vietnamese: "Xin chΓ o" (sin chow) β€” hello. Lao: "Sabaidee" (sa-bai-dee) with hands pressed together in a slight bow (the nop gesture). A few words of the local language go a very long way and will delight locals.
